Intellectual progress
Intellectual progress concerns how researchers and students improve their learning with new technologies. We study intellectual virtues such as curiosity, intellectual autonomy and intellectual justice, and how they can guide the use of AI in research and education.
Value progress
Value progress concerns whether science works fairly for the people inside and outside it. We study intellectual inclusion, linguistic injustice and fairness in grant review, and we explore what AI changes in each of them.
For example, women were once excluded from many scientific institutions. Expanding their participation represents value progress. Unfortunately, practices that subject women to psychological and physical pressure persist. In the future, these practices will be recognized as unacceptable. Value progress also involves recognizing and changing harms that have become normalized.
Our work follows three lines.
AI in Science
We investigate how AI changes discovery, peer review and grant evaluation, and which intellectual virtues its responsible use requires.
AI in Education
We explore how students can use AI without losing intellectual autonomy.
Improving science
We research how team structures, funding decisions and inclusion affect the quality and fairness of research.
